CHRIS GARZA: “I Think The Guitar Tone On KORN’s Life Is Peachy Is The Nastiest Tone Of All Time”

In terms of the nastiest guitar tone ever recorded, opinions range wildly – however in case you ask Suicide Silence guitarist Chris Garza, there’s one clear winner: Korn‘s 1996 album Life Is Peachy. Talking on a current episode of The Garza Podcast, the deathcore mainstay weighed in on what makes a guitar tone cross from simply soiled to really iconic.

“I believe that the guitar tone for Life Is Peachy is the nastiest tone of all time, and nobody talks about that file. I believe that is the place it begins and ends. A variety of like… every time I hear heavy bands now, us included, I am like, ‘ah, I am not unique. They’re even not unique.’

“I simply hear Korn on each drug potential. Like, even after I do stuff, or I hear a brand new band, it is like — it simply appears like Korn on steroids and each drug possible. It is simply maximized to the max. However I believe again to Life Is Peachy probably the most. It is simply an unsightly, ugly tone.

Garza continued: “I believe once we’re speaking nasty tone, it’s sort of… it sort of sucks. It sort of sucks, and I purposely — I am telling you — purposely, for hours, I sit down at my amp, or right here, and I am like: how can I make my tone… It’s a effective line between nasty and shitty. It’s an nearly inconceivable line to hit. However if you hit it, it’s particular.

“And I believe this file is actually the place it begins and the place it ends. To get a extremely heavy, nasty tone — it’s a second in time.”

Following the large underground success of their 1994 self-titled debut, Korn returned with their sophomore album, Life Is Peachy, launched on October 15, 1996 by way of Immortal/Epic Information.

Life Is Peachy was recorded at Indigo Ranch Studios in Malibu, CA, the identical location the place their debut was tracked. Working once more with producer Ross Robinson, the band intentionally aimed to seize a uncooked, abrasive, and unpolished sound. The end result was a dirtier, looser, and extra chaotic file in comparison with their debut.
