Revocation has had a totally fascinating previous decade-ish. Their 2016 document Nice Is Our Sin was a straight-up thrash-terpiece, whereas The Outer Ones in 2018 took a tough flip into some otherworldly loss of life steel. Then got here the sinister vile-ness that was Netherheaven in 2022, which is adopted by the band’s latest album New Gods, New Masters – a seeming marriage of every part Revocation has ever executed up so far.

New Gods, New Masters appears like a retrospective of Revocation‘s profession filtered via their most up-to-date materials. You’ve got obtained loss of life steel ragers like “Sarcophagi Of The Soul” and “Dystopian Vermin” alongside some excessive steel legends bringing an added layer of chaos to the combination – “Confines Of Infinity” that includes Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation, “Cronenberged” that includes Jonny Davy of Job for a Cowboy, and “Buried Epoch” that includes Luc Lemay of Gorguts.

Or to place it a bit extra bluntly: New Gods, New Masters is fucking heavy. Should you’re into the groovier and chunkier aspect of Revocation that flirts with wrist-breaking technicality, that is your album.

Then there’s the instrumental “The All Seeing” that includes jazz participant Gilad Hekselman, who performed with Pat Metheny at The Kennedy Middle. This one’s over 5 minutes of riffs upon riffs that each one fall collectively right into a masterclass of not solely write an instrumental, however for any guitarist critical about their instrument. And no – there is no huge band jazz part that panders to Hekselman. This tune simply shreds.

New Gods, New Masters is spectacular in that it is every part you’d need from Revocation at this level, however a bit extra streamlined. This feels rather less technical than its predecessors and extra targeting the ability of writing a superb riff and an important groove. Longtime Revocation followers are certain to search out one thing to like right here, however new followers are actually going to discover a strong entry level into the band’s in depth discography right here as effectively.
