The brand new Umeå-based ensemble Backengrillen have formally arrived with their self-titled debut album, out immediately January 23, 2026 on vinyl, CD and digitally through Bandcamp, launched via Svart Data.
Rooted in hardcore, punk, noise and free jazz, Backengrillen are much less a band than a collision. Their lineup attracts from the unique incarnation of Refused, alongside deep ties to tasks akin to Hearth Orchestra, The Worldwide Noise Conspiracy, INVSN, TEXT, Ultimate Exit, The Factor and basic jazz outfits — with one member even tracing their origins again to the 1980 jazz-rock ensemble Nirvana.
As saxophonist and experimental icon Mats Gustafsson places it, the band’s ethos is about tearing down borders fully: “Music and artwork with out particular labels is a necessity for a greater residing — create your personal particular person genres and open up for extra death-jazz-core-noise-metal-poetry to enter your world of destroying the native and world stupidities round us.”
That sense of joyful destruction runs straight via the report. Drummer David Sandström sums it up with typical bluntness: “We actually hope this slab of silly, violent demise rock will spoil somebody’s day. Haha.”
Backengrillen describe themselves as anti-fascist, anti-racist, free-form demise jazz, working within the reminiscence of Lars Lystedt whereas carving out new views on each jazz and punk. The result’s a confrontational, in-your-face hybrid — hardcore jazz that is as bodily as it’s chaotic.
Sonically, the band pull inspiration from an deliberately unruly spectrum: The Cramps, Little Richard, Albert Ayler, Polly Bradfield, Entombed, John Zorn, Misfits, The Stooges, Lars Gullin and Can all loom someplace within the wreckage. It is music that swings, screams and convulses — 4 “colliding locomotives,” because the band describe it, producing a brand new sort of brutal magnificence.
