American composer Michael Torke (b. 1961) has simply accomplished a brand new concerto for solo violin and string orchestra merely titled Final.

Final is a set of twelve meditative items that may be carried out individually, or as an entire. The titles evoke recollections and the passage of time. (Final Fall, Final 12 months, Final Month, Final Sunday, and so forth.) Torke feedback that they “are nearly like second actions of violin concertos.” His program notes for Final are as follows:

The Stoics advocate we reside within the current: to worry over the previous or stress concerning the future is counterproductive as a result of these lie past our management. However I believe there are different methods to answer the previous. We are able to cherish and even mourn what’s now not current. For me, our previous populates our current, whether or not or not it’s final 12 months, final month, final week, or final Sunday.

Final Fall, the primary piece within the assortment, is serenely elegiac. It features a descending harmonic sequence that feels as if it drifted in from a Baroque violin concerto by Bach or Vivaldi. Within the magical opening bars, the music comes into focus progressively, one voice at a time, starting with a descending 4 notice ostinato. We enter right into a nostalgic journey, concluding with the melodic threads evaporating as rapidly as they got here.

This recording, launched final Wednesday because the album’s first single, options violinist Siwoo Kim and the East Coast Chamber Orchestra:
