Australia, it is time to meet your cast for The Lion King! Opening at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre from April 2026, this season marks ten years since this iconic musical was last on stage here in Australia.

Returning to Sydney to lead the cast as Rafiki will be Buyi Zama, bringing her world-renowned talent back to Australia for a third time after captivating audiences in previous tours and productions across five continents. Originally from South Africa, she loved performing here so much that Australia has now become her home.

Zama will be joined on stage by another alumni member of The Lion King global family. New Zealander Nick Afoa, who first wowed theatre-goers as Simba twelve years ago in the 2013 Australian tour, before going on to perform the role on London’s West End, now returns to continue the circle of life as Mufasa.

Completing the principal cast will be a mix of new talent and familiar faces, including Benn Welford (Australia) as Zazu, Jamie McGregor (Aotearoa/New Zealand) as Timon, Rutene Spooner (Aotearoa/New Zealand) as Pumbaa, Aphiwe Nyezi (South Africa) as Simba, Emily Nkomo (Australia) as Nala, Winston Hillyer (Philippines/Aotearoa/New Zealand) as Banzai, Ezra Williams (Australia) as Shenzi and Mat Verevis (Australia) as Ed.

The Lion King has been seen by more than 120 million world-wide, cementing its status as one of the most beloved musicals of all time.

Winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Choreography (Garth Fagan), the awe-inspiring visual artistry, unforgettable music, and uniquely theatrical storytelling of The Lion King has made it a global phenomenon. Loyal fans can once again experience the majesty of this smash-hit musical in Sydney, while a new generation of theatre goers will discover the magic of Disney’s epic theatrical masterpiece.

Tickets for Disney’s The Lion King Sydney 2026 Season are on sale now at thelionkingmusical.com.au.
