    THE SCOOP | Canadians Royce Vavrek & Soundstreams Make The List Of OPERA America Next Stage Grants

    OPERA America has introduced the recipients of $165,000 in Subsequent Stage Grants. Seven corporations will obtain Subsequent Stage Grants, and a Canadian librettist, in addition to a Canadian firm, made the record.

    The grants assist the both the creation of latest works, or subsequent manufacturing of current and under-performed North American works, with a view to garnering deserved consideration from producers, audiences, and critics. The recipients have the chance to edit and regulate current work in preparation for efficiency in entrance of latest audiences.

    The impartial panel of consultants who selected the recipients are: Rose Freeman, stage director,
    instructor, and producer of theatre and opera; Daniel Fung, government director, Youth Music Monterey
    County; Shawn Okpebholo, composer and conductor; and Pelham Pearce, government director, Japanese Shore Artwork Middle.

    Canadians On The Listing

    LA Opera (Los Angeles, CA) for The Outdated Man and the Sea by composer Paola Prestini and Canadian librettist Royce Vavrek

    The Outdated Man and the Sea premiered in 2023, and LA Opera will current the work throughout their 2026/27 season as a part of its ongoing collaboration with Beth Morrison Tasks. The opera was impressed by Hemingway’s iconic novel, and delves into themes that span ageing, the notion of legacy, and humanity’s relationship to the ocean. The manufacturing will star Nathan Gunn, beloved Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman, Rodolfo Girón, and Yvette Keong, joined on stage by cellist Jeffrey Zeigler.

    Pimooteewin, The Journey, a Cree language opera, was commissioned by Soundstreams in collaboration with the Elmer Iseler Singers, and premiered in 2008. The one-act opera was remounted in November 2019 at Daniels Spectrum as a double invoice with Gállábartnit, sung in Sámi, one other Indigenous language, a piece that was commissioned by Swedish firm Musik i Syd. The Swedish group was impressed by Pimooteewin to create an expression of Scandinavian Indigenous language and artwork. Two Odysseys: Pimooteewin / Gállábártni received a 2020 Dora Mavor Moore Award Winner within the Opera Division for Excellent Efficiency by an Ensemble, and toured to Northern Ontario, amongst different areas.

    Pimooteewin, The Journey, showcases Indigenous language and storytelling with a libretto by famend creator Tomson Freeway and music by Melissa Hui. The story comes from a standard Cree story about Weesageechak the Trickster and Misigoo (the Eagle). The 2 attempt to carry the spirits of their family members again to the residing world, and chaos outcomes. It’s scored for 2 vocal soloists, chamber choir, chamber ensemble, narrator, and three actors/dancers, and the inventive crew contains director Yvette Nolan, choreographer Marta Fjellheim Sarre, and music director David Fallis.

    • Maryland Opera (Baltimore, MD) for Oshun by composer B.E. Boykin and librettist Jarrod Lee
    • Nashville Opera (Nashville, TN) for Fortuna the Time Bender vs. The Schoolgirls of Doom by
      composer and librettist Jason Powell
    • Opera Southwest (Albuquerque, NM) for Salsipuedes: a Story of Love, Struggle and Anchovies by
      composer Daniel Catán and librettists Eliseo Alberto and Francisco Hinojosa
    • Resonance Works (Pittsburgh, PA) for The Jungle E-book by composer Kamala Sankaram and
      librettist Kelley Rourke
    • Washington Nationwide Opera (Washington, D.C.) for Treemonisha by composer and librettist
      Scott Joplin; New performing version by composer Damien Sneed and playwright Kyle Bass

    Congratulations to all of the recipients, and Toronto audiences will stay up for experiencing Pimooteewin, The Journey in a future season.
