    The RBC Rising Artist Award for 2025 has been awarded to Mi’kmaw of Ktaqmkuk soprano Emma Pennell.

    Emma grew up within the small city of South River in Northern Ontario, and says she remembers the timber of the forest as their first viewers. With a Bachelor’s Diploma with Honours in Voice Efficiency and a minor in Indigenous Research from Western College, Emma went on to check within the Artist Diploma Program at The Glenn Gould Faculty on the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Pennell was the 2nd Prize winner on the 2024 Canadian Opera Firm’s Ensemble Studio Centre Stage Competitors.

    Together with their work as a vocalist and poet, Pennell is an Indigenous activist who seems to be to create areas for Indigenous voices in music. They co-authored the Indigenous Coverage Paper for the Ontario Universities Pupil Alliance, and based the School of Music Indigenous Management Initiative on the Don Wright School of Music.
