    Toronto City Opera Presents Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land

    Toronto Metropolis Opera will current Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land to shut out their 2024/25 season. The opera hits the stage on the Al Inexperienced Theatre on June 18, 21 and 22.

    Aaron Copland: The Tender Land

    The Tender Land was written by Aaron Copland to a libretto by Horace Everett. Everett was a pseudonym for Erik Johns, a dancer who lived with Copland as his secretary/lover on the time. It was Copland’s solely full size opera, and premiered in 1954.

    Copland started engaged on the opera in 1952, based mostly on a e book of images of Melancholy-era sharecroppers, or tenant farmers. It was Everett/Johns who got here up with the story a few poor farming household within the midwest whose lives are modified when two drifters arrive on the town.

    The opera was initially commissioned by the NBC Tv Opera Workshop with the intention of premiering on TV, however the tv producers rejected the piece. The work that finally premiered in April 1954 was a shorter model in two acts. The work, and it was critiqued for each characters and storyline.

    Johns and Copland subsequently expanded the opera to a three-act format, which was discovered a significantly better reception with critics and audiences.

    The Story

    In a Midwest city through the Nice Melancholy and the mud bowl period of the Thirties, when frequent and devastating mud storms have been inflicting excessive ecological and agricultural harm, a younger farm lady named Laurie is graduating from highschool.
