The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) is preparing to open a transformative new chapter in 2026 with the launch of its state-of-the-art campus at ECU City in Perth’s CBD. This ambitious relocation from Mount Lawley to the heart of the city signals a heartwarming and significant investment in the future of dance education, performance and collaboration.

The new Edith Cowan University (ECU) City campus will house an enviable eight public performance and rehearsal spaces, including a dedicated purpose-built dance theatre designed to replicate professional standards. These facilities will undoubtedly enhance the student experience and offer training and regular performance opportunities in a real-world performance setting. Prioritising cutting-edge technology housed in contemporary design are a bold statement from WAAPA, underpinning their commitment to nurturing the next generation of dancers and offering an elevating training experience.

The move has been supported by a $30 million philanthropic partnership with the Minderoo Foundation and the campus will offer unprecedented facilities at a time when arts courses are on the decline nationally and indeed globally.

Executive Dean Professor David Shirley has recently emphasised that the new campus is not just a physical space but a launchpad for creative exploration and engagement with the broader University and with the dance and arts industry, including longstanding partners WA Ballet, The Blue Room and others. The new facilities are designed to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration amongst their programs and enable dance students to work alongside peers in music, theatre, and production.

The move to ECU City also aligns with broader initiatives to grow Western Australia’s creative industries and support live performance. By placing WAAPA in the heart of Perth, the academy will enhance its engagement with the broader WA community and contribute to Perth’s vibrant cultural life.

As WAAPA transitions to its new home, it continues to celebrate its rich history in dance education. Attracting talent from across Australia and graduating numerous successful artists.

WAAPA’s move to the CBD with facilities that will be the envy of any training institution represents a significant leap forward for dance education in Australia. Purpose-built facilities, emphasis on collaboration, and strategic location strengthen the position of WAAPA as a dance and performing arts powerhouse and cement their role in shaping the future of dance and performing arts in Australia for many years to come.
