The West Level Affiliation of Graduates has canceled a ceremony that was set to honor Tom Hanks with the Sylvanus Thayer Award, which acknowledges an “excellent citizen” whose profession exemplifies the U.S Navy Academy’s beliefs of “Obligation, Honor, Nation,” based on The Washington Post.
In an e-mail to college, Retired Military Col. Mark Bieger, president and chief government officer of the Affiliation, defined the choice as a need to “deal with [the Academy’s] core mission of getting ready cadets to guide, battle, and win as officers on the planet’s most deadly drive.”
Hanks was introduced because the 2025 recipient of the award in June.
