In 2018, Vsevolod Maievskyi achieved his dream of becoming a member of the Mariinsky Ballet. For 4 years, Maievskyi was onstage evening after evening, dancing the whole lot from demanding corps components to Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, a task during which he debuted at age 23. Initially from Kyiv, Ukraine, Maievskyi made the choice to depart the Mariinsky in 2022. He danced with Dresden Semperoper Ballett from 2022–23 and joined English Nationwide Ballet final yr as a junior soloist.

Maievskyi’s dancing is polished but relaxed (one thing he attributes to a background in ballroom dance), and imbued with innate charisma. And whereas he’s nonetheless settling into his new life in London, his ardour for ballet stays ablaze. “I typically ask myself why I do that, and the reply is straightforward: I simply like it,” he says.

    Ballroom Beginnings

“My mother began me in ballroom dance at age 5—I didn’t even begin ballet till I used to be 12. There are such a lot of advantages to coaching in ballroom dance. It taught me methods to actually really feel every place, methods to join with my associate, and methods to diversify my actions.”

    A Aggressive Edge

“I grew up in Kyiv, Ukraine, and I all the time had massive goals. Ballet competitions like Youth America Grand Prix helped me see a future in ballet. I competed in 2016 and 2018, and people scholarships helped begin my profession.”

    A Singular Artwork Type

“The expertise of watching and dancing ballet is exclusive. It makes you’re feeling alive. Life is so fragile, and something can occur. To me, it doesn’t matter how good your approach is or should you tousled throughout a present. What issues is that you just danced with actual emotion and gave one thing to the viewers.”

    Character Research

“When preparing for a task, music is the whole lot. After I hear it, I actually really feel it—typically, I can virtually begin to cry. I don’t even have to learn something concerning the character, I simply let the music encourage me. I additionally prefer to study from different dancers, and watching them carry out roles. You may all the time study one thing about your self by one other individual’s dancing.”

    Every part and Extra

“I need to dance so many alternative ballets, from classics like Don Quixote, La Bayadère, and Études, to Edward Clug’s Radio and Juliet, or works by David Dawson and William Forsythe. I’m so open to the whole lot and am hungry to bounce and study.”
